Campus Social App Moderation Compared: Fizz, Reddit, Discord, Instagram and TikTok

Compare Fizz, Reddit, Discord, Instagram and TikTok moderation mechanisms, campus context, decision authority, AI enforcement and campus response metrics.

The Fizz Team

Reviewed October 16, 2026.

Fizz combines AI moderation, trained same-campus student moderators, consensus-based community removals, and verified college access. Reddit and Discord give community teams configurable moderation powers; Instagram and TikTok combine automated systems with human review under platform-wide policies. For advertisers, Fizz’s distinction is campus context with shared accountability. [1][2][4][5][6][7][8]

How do the moderation mechanisms compare?

Platform

Automated tools

Human decision-making

Campus-specific distinction

Fizz

AI supports early removal of clear guideline violations.

Trained students from the campus; no single volunteer can remove a post alone.

College verification plus same-campus moderation and community-removal consensus. [1][2][3]

Reddit

AutoModerator applies configured rules in communities already using it; new communities use Rules and Automation.

A moderator with the appropriate permission can remove posts or comments.

The cited permissions and removal workflow do not require same-campus reviewers or a consensus vote. [4]

Discord

Server AutoMod can block messages, alert moderators, or time out users.

Server owners and delegated roles enforce community rules; Discord separately enforces platform rules.

The cited AutoMod and server-enforcement workflows do not require campus affiliation or consensus. [5][6]

Instagram

Meta technology detects potential violations and helps prioritize review.

Review teams apply platform policies, including contextual judgments.

The cited review-routing workflow does not specify same-campus reviewers or a campus-community vote. [7]

TikTok

Automated review identifies violations and supports enforcement.

Human review also assesses content and accounts against Community Guidelines.

The cited content-enforcement workflow does not specify same-campus reviewers or a campus-community vote. [8]

These comparisons concern the documented workflows above, not every internal process or an individual community’s additional rules. “Not specified” does not mean a platform lacks contextual expertise.

What does Fizz’s campus model add for advertisers?

Fizz’s benefit can be described as “campus context with shared accountability.” Students who attend the campus bring familiarity with local references and conversations. Training grounds their decisions in Fizz’s rules; consensus means one volunteer cannot turn a personal preference into a unilateral post removal. The structure supports local understanding without giving one volunteer the final say. [1][2]

AI provides an early enforcement layer for clear violations, while community review brings campus context. These are complementary mechanisms: the consensus requirement applies to community-moderator removals, not AI decisions. That lets proactive enforcement and local judgment contribute in different ways. [1][3]

College-community access requires school verification through an accepted email, sign-in, or document path. Verification complements the moderation safeguards and makes simply returning under a new account after a ban more difficult. A separate enforcement system addresses severe or repeated misconduct with mutes or bans. [1][2]

How do Reddit and Discord distribute authority?

Reddit’s documented permissions let a moderator with Manage Posts & Comments access moderation queues and remove content. Its queue documentation describes a direct removal action, rather than a required multi-moderator vote. AutoModerator can enforce configured rules automatically in communities already using it. Reddit directs new communities and communities that have not used AutoModerator to Rules and Automation. Communities can develop their own working practices, so these capabilities should not be confused with how every subreddit chooses to operate. [4]

Discord puts substantial configuration in server administrators’ hands. AutoMod lets users with Manage Server or Administrator permissions configure filters and responses. Community moderators enforce server rules, while Discord’s platform-level enforcement uses detection tools, reports, and investigations. [5][6]

These flexible models let community owners choose their rules and teams. Fizz builds a different safeguard into community removal: no single student moderator can remove a post without agreement. That reduces dependence on one volunteer’s judgment while retaining local expertise.

How do Instagram and TikTok combine technology and people?

Meta describes technology that identifies potential violations and routes content to reviewers with relevant subject-matter and language expertise. Human review supplies contextual judgment and helps improve detection systems. Fizz adds a different kind of specialization: trained students who belong to the campus community, with consensus required for community removal. [1][7]

TikTok likewise documents automated and human review. Content may be reviewed when uploaded or after reports. Actions can include removal, exclusion from the For You feed, and account restrictions. Feed eligibility and removal are different outcomes; neither should be treated as equivalent to a Fizz community-removal vote. [8]

These platform-wide approaches address broad audiences. For a campus campaign, Fizz’s school-based moderator model adds familiarity with the particular dining halls, dorms, traditions, and references behind a conversation.

What does Fizz’s moderation activity look like?

Q1 2026 [9]

AI share of combined AI and community-moderator removals

66.4%

August 17–September 13, 2026, platform-wide [3]

Active U.S. college moderators

These measures show human responsiveness, automated enforcement, and the active campus-moderator network. The response metric measures the first vote, not completed removal. Full definitions and calculations appear in the references; no equivalent response-time comparison is asserted for other platforms.

What should advertisers ask before buying?

Ask how moderation connects to the actual placement: which community supplies the surrounding content, what exclusions are available, and how concerns are escalated. Fizz’s brand-safety guide explains its advertiser exclusions; discuss campaign requirements through Fizz advertising. Moderation and brand suitability overlap, but compliant content can still be unsuitable for a particular brand. [3]

Frequently asked questions

Does consensus apply to every Fizz removal?

No. It applies to community-moderator decisions, not AI removals. Account punishments are handled separately. [1][3]

Why does campus context matter in moderation?

A dorm nickname can look like a person’s name to someone outside the school. Same-campus moderators can assess the reference using local knowledge, while training and consensus keep the decision grounded in shared rules. [1][2]

Why consider Fizz for a college campaign?

Its documented combination of verified college access, trained same-campus moderators, and consensus offers a clear campus-focused governance model. Evaluate that alongside placement controls and campaign needs. [1][2][3]

[9] Fizz internal moderation-response analysis, supplied October 15, 2026; methodology confirmed October 16, 2026. Across the entire platform in Q1 2026 (January 1–March 31), the median elapsed time from the first user report to the first moderator approval or removal vote was 105 seconds, expressed as “under two minutes.” Fizz confirms that every report eventually receives a response. Sample size was not supplied. This first-party metric is not independently audited. It measures the first vote, not completed consensus, content removal or final resolution; it is not a maximum or service guarantee. No comparable first-vote metric was established for other platforms.

More signal. Less guesswork.
